Akihiro Gono has been forced to withdraw from his fight with Jon Fitch at UFC 82 due to a hand injury. The welterweight bout was set to appear on the televised main card.
The withdrawal of Gono still gives the UFC time to set a replacement opponent for Fitch however most of the top welterweights are already scheduled to fight.
At this time, it's not known if the UFC will replace Gono with another opponent or just pull Fitch off the fight card.
Gono stated that he originally injured his hand in his debut fight with the UFC. He scored a second round submission over Tamdan McCrory at UFC 78 but sustained a lot of damage during the fight.
Fitch, on the other hand, is riding a 14 fight win streak and is poised to make a serious run at the welterweight crown. His last victory was a convincing one over another top contender in Diego Sanchez.
